On November 20, 2014, Akai Gurley was shot and killed by Peter Liang in Brooklyn, New York City.
Liang and another fellow officer were patrolling stairwells in the New York City Housing Authority Louis H. Pink Houses. They entered a pitch-dark stairwell and Liang had his gun drawn.
Gurley entered the stairwell with his girlfriend, Melissa Butler, on the seventh floor, 1 floor below the officers. Liang, startled by the noise, turned and fired his gun, claiming that it”just went off.”
Upon searching for the bullet, Liang discovered a wounded Gurley and a crying Butler. The bullet had ricocheted off the wall and hit him in the chest.
Liang failed to help as they waited for an ambulance, leaving Butler to attempt to resuscitate Gurley alone.
In February of 2015, Liang was convicted of second-degree manslaughter and official misconduct.
In April of 2016, Peter Liang was sentenced to 5 years of probation and 800 hours of community service for the killing of Akai Gurley.
