On October 20, 2014, Laquan McDonald was shot and killed by Jason Van Dyke in Chicago, Illinois.
Police responded to reports of a man breaking into vehicles and carrying a knife.
Initial reports stated that Laquan was acting erratically as he walked down the street. Officers stated that he refused to put down the knife and lunged at them, leading them to open fire.
Van Dyke shot Laquan a total of 16 times.
The shooting was ruled as justified and Van Dyke was not charged.
Dash cam footage released 13 months after the Laquan’s death showed that he was shot as he was walking away.
Van Dyke was charged with first-degree the same day as the footage was released in November of 2015. He was released on bail a few days later.
In October of 2018, he was found guilty of second-degree murder and 16 counts of aggravated battery with a firearm.
In January of 2018 Jason Van Dyke was sentenced to 6.75 years in prison for the murder of Laquan McDonald. A request that he be sentenced for the 16 counts of assault was denied.
