On July 17, 2014, Eric Garner was killed by Daniel Pantaleo after being put in a chokehold during arrest in Staten Island, New York City.
A group of officers approached Garner on the suspicion of selling single cigarettes.
They attempted to arrest Garner after he grew frustrated of being harassed. Pantaleo grabbed him, and Garner pulled away.
Pantaleo then proceeded to wrestle him to the ground by putting Garner in a chokehold.
Garner repeated the phrase “I can’t breathe” 11 times as multiple officers held him facedown on the sidewalk.
He lost consciousness, and officers let him lay there for 7 minutes as they waited for an ambulance.
Eric Garner was pronounced dead approximately one hour later.
In December of 2014, a jury decided against indicting Pantaleo, sparking a large series of demonstrations nationwide.
Daniel Pantaleo was not fired from the NYPD until August of 2019, 5 years after he killed Eric Garner.
