On April 4, 2015, Walter Scott was shot and killed by Michael Slager in Charleston, South Carolina.
Slager stopped Scott for a broken taillight in a parking lot of an auto parts store.
Slager approaches the vehicle; he and Scott converse before he returns to his patrol car.
Scott then flees from his car, and Slager begins chasing him.
There is a altercation in which Slager fires his taser at Scott; it hits him, and he flees again.
Slager then draws his gun and fires 8 rounds as Scott runs from him. He hits him a total of 5 times.
Slager then radioed inot a dispatcher, stating “shots fired and the subject is down. He grabbed my taser.”
He stated that he feared for his life and “felt threatened.”
Video footage contradicted this initial police report, proving that Slager shot Scott in the back as he was fleeing.
In June of 2015, Slager was indicted by jury on a charge of murder. He was then released on bond in January of 2016.
Later that year, a trial ended in mistrial due to a hung jury.
In May of 2016, Slager was indicted on federal charges of the violation of civil rights.
In May of 2017, Michael Slager pleaded guilty to these charges, and in the December of that year he was sentenced to 20 years in prison.
