On February 26, 2012, Trayvon Martin was shot and killed by George Zimmerman in Sanford, Florida.
He was walking home from a convenience store when Zimmerman saw him, claiming that he was “a real suspicious guy” who was “up to no good.”
Zimmerman followed him after reporting Martin’s presence to the Sanford Police Department.
After a confrontation, Zimmerman shot an unarmed Martin at close range, ultimately resulting in his death.
Zimmerman claimed it to be “self-defense.”
Upon initial investigation, police declared that there was no evidence to contradict Zimmerman’s telling of events, so they released him.
Eventually, Zimmerman was charged with second-degree murder and brought to trial.
On July 13, 2013 the jury found George Zimmerman not guilty of the murder of Trayvon Martin.
